Every region has its baking traditions, and in December,
Alsatians cook up mannele (Alsatian
for "little man") to celebrate Saint Nicholas Day (6th December).
These small brioches come shaped in the form of a man and traditionally
contain a generous helping of raisins, although most boulangeries now also offer them with chocolate chips, Nutella, and even hundreds and
thousands.
Depending on which story you read, the mannele is supposed to represent either Saint Nicholas or the three
children he saved from an evil butcher...

Chaque région a
ses petites traditions pâtissières, et en Alsace le mannele (Alsacien pour "petit bonhomme") se mange pour la
Saint-Nicolas.
Petite brioche
en forme de bonhomme, le mannele est traditionnellement
enrichi de raisins secs, mais on trouve également des mannele aux pépites de chocolat et au Nutella.
Pour la petite
histoire, le mannele représente Saint
Nicolas, dont la fête le 6 décembre est très célébrée en Alsace, et les trois
enfants qu'il a sauvés d'un méchant boucher.
