Winter on its way / L'hiver s'annonce

In the last few weeks, there have been more than a few signs of winter. The last weekend of October, it snowed most of the day (and night) in Strasbourg. The white stuff didn't stick in town, but the Vosges were covered with more than a sprinkling: there was over 10 centimetres on the summits. We went for a run in the lower hills and were treated to a very Canadian landscape.

In town, the preparations are in full swing for Strasbourg's famous Christmas market. A huge tree has been erected and decorated on the main square (Place Kléber), lights and garlands have been artfully draped in trees and from rooftops, and kiosks are slowly being assembled, ready for vendors of mulled wine, gingerbread, locals arts and crafts, and much more.

The market officially begins on 24th November and runs until the end of the year. The streets will be packed with tourists from next weekend!

Depuis quelques semaines, les signes ne trompent pas : l'hiver arrive à grand pas. Le dernier weekend du mois d'octobre, il a neigé la plupart d'une journée et d'une nuit à Strasbourg. La neige n'est pas restée en ville, mais dans les Vosges, il y avait plus de 10 centimètres en haut. Nous avons fait une sortie course à pied dans les collines, et le paysage nous a pas mal rappelé le Canada.

En ville, tout se met en place pour le fameux marché de Noël de Strasbourg. Un grand sapin a été monté et décoré sur la place principale (Place Kléber), des lumières et des guirlandes ont été pendues aux toits et aux arbres, et les kiosques en bois apparaissent dans les rues, prêts à accueillir les vendeurs de vin chaud, bretzels, pain d'épices et autres gâteries.

Le marché démarre le 24 novembre et finit le 31 décembre. Les rues seront blindées de touristes à partir du weekend prochain !
