Last week, we headed to the Saputo Stadium to watch Montreal’s soccer (i.e.: football) team, the Impacts, take on the New York Red Bulls in a pre-season friendly. The big pull was the presence of New York captain Thierry Henry.

Sure, the half-full 20,000 capacity stadium was a far cry from Henry’s glory days at the Camp Nou or the Stade de France. And, the standard of play was more akin to a Sunday pub match than the Champions League, but he was nonetheless there.

Despite all this, there was a real stadium atmosphere – thanks mainly to the hundred or so hardcore local supporters who sang out their hearts, lit up flares, and threw toilet paper onto the pitch with the kind of gleeful bliss incited by a Wembley cup final. 

And, this being a North American sports event, the consumption of hot dogs and beer was, of course, de rigeur. There are some traditions you just have to respect…

As for the now heavily bearded Thierry Henry, he didn’t seem particularly motivated by playing in Montreal. In fact, he lost the ball at nearly every challenge, and didn’t even bother coming back on after half time. It was all to the benefit of the Impacts, who won the match 1-0 with a splendid header from Gerba, a Cameroon-born Canadian. 

On the back of this match, Montreal hopes to join the Major League Soccer in 2012. Which means that, from next year, we could be watching the likes of David Beckham and other greats who have chosen to finish their career (and boost their bank balances) on this side of the Atlantic.

La semaine dernière, nous sommes allés pour la première fois regarder les Impacts, l’équipe de ‘soccer’ de Montréal. L’occasion ? La venue de Thierry Henry et son équipe des New York Red Bulls pour un match amical.

Avec un stade de 20 000 spectateurs à moitié plein, l’ambiance était plus proche d’un match de Guinguamp que le Camp Nou ou le Stade de France qu’a connu Henry autrefois. Et, à vrai dire, le niveau de jeu ressemblait plus à un match de village qu’à une finale de la Ligue des Champions…

Malgré cela, l’ambiance était de la partie, grâce surtout à une centaine de supporteurs ‘ultras’ qui chantaient, mettaient les feux d’artifice et jetaient le PQ sur le terrain comme s’ils étaient en finale de la coupe à Wembley. 

Et comme tout événement sportif d’ici, la bière et le hot dog s’imposaient comme une étape obligatoire (bien appréciée !).

Quant à Thierry Henry, il est maintenant bien barbu. L’ex capitaine d’Arsenal n’avait pas l’air très motivé, perdant la balle à quasiment chaque fois qu’il l’a eue… et n’a même pas fait l’effort de revenir sur le terrain pour le deuxième mi-temps. C’était tout au profit des Impacts, qui ont pu remporter le match 1-0 sur un très bon coup de tête de Gerba, un Canadien d’origine camerounaise.

Sur cette lancée, Montréal espère pouvoir faire partie de la Major League de Soccer à partir de 2012. Dès l’année prochaine, on pourrait donc voir l’arrivée de David Beckham et d’autres ex-géants qui ont décidé de finir leur carrière en beauté (c’est-à-dire bien payés) de ce côté de l’Atlantique.
