FRANCAIS
ENGLISH
It’s been a long time coming, but the end of winter is finally just around the corner. Above-zero temperatures are now the norm – and there are two other tell-tale signs that we’re fast approaching spring: all the litter submerged under snow over the last 4 months is gradually being liberated onto the city’s pavements and lawns; and huge pot holes in the road know as “nids de poules” are wreaking havoc for motorists.
The “nids de poules” (“hen’s nests”) are the result of ice repeatedly freezing and melting on the roads during winter. Come March, these craters leave Montreal motorists with an extremely bumpy ride. Which gives the council, after its month of snow-clearing, a new job: filling in these ubiquitous pot holes… before beginning full-blown roadworks in the summer!
As for the litter, it really is the main downer of the end-of-winter period. At this time of year, Montreal becomes a giant rubbish tip, its streets suddenly soiled with four months' worth of accumulated rubbish and abondonned objects. What’s more, street cleaning doesn’t begin until 1 April (because, according to the council, it’s still winter) – so we still have another fortnight to endure with our streets filled with crap.
Vraiment dégueu votre quartier.

Who loses an ice skate?
ReplyDeleteCleary I spoke too soon about winter ending: we've just had a new load of snow on the first day of spring...
